The State Nickname:

Constitution State is the official nickname of the State of Connecticut as stipulated by the Connecticut State Register and Manual of 1998.  This nickname was designated by the state General Assembly in 1959.  The basis for this nickname dates back to 1638/1639 when a group of the original English settlers came together to create what were known as Fundamental Orders which framed a social compact for the governance of their new colony.  This is considered by many to be the first written Constitution in history, hence the origin of the nickname of the state.
