Although gold was a driver in the development of Georgia as a state, today gold production is non-existent on a commercial scale and the only mining products are clay, stones, and sand.

Georgia, along with other Southern states, was once a leader in textile production but today most of that industry has moved abroad.  However, carpeting remains a viable industry in northwestern Georgia along the Interstate 75 corridor.

The importance of infrastructure cannot be overstated as Georgia was ranked as the number 2 state for infrastructure and global access.  This infrastructure includes several major seaports along with the aforementioned Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Georgia is also a major railway hub, featuring the most extensive rail system in the Southeast, being ranked number 3 nationally for rail accessibility.

Added to this is the extensive interstate highway system with 1,200 miles of interstate highway and 20,000 miles of federal and state highways that help move over $620 billion worth of cargo per year.  The six interstates located in Georgia place 80% of the United States population within a two day truck drive.

A major new industry in Georgia in the television and movie industry.  Major television shows filmed in the Georgia include: Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, and The Vampire Diaries.  Major films that were shot, at least in part, in Georgia include: Passengers, Forrest Gump, Contagion, Hidden Figures, Sully, Baby Driver, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Captain America: Civil War, and Black Panther along with many more.

The Flag:

The story of the Georgia state flag is by far the most complicated we have considered thus far.  From the original, although unofficial flag, of 1879 to today, there have been at least eight different versions of the Georgia state flag.

By far the most contentious was the flag that existed from 1956 to 2001.  The prominent placement of the Battle Flag of the Northern Virginia Army was considered by many to insulting to African Americans because of its association with the Confederacy and the institution of slavery, the maintenance of which was but one of many issues that prompted the secession of the southern states and the origins of the Civil War.
