Slytherin is one of the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was founded by Salazar Slytherin. Slytherins are known for being cunning and ambitious, although it is also known to have produced many Dark witches and wizards. According to J.K. Rowling, Slytherin roughly corresponds to the element of water.

Slytherins are associated with cunning, ambition and a tendency to look after their own.
Slytherin has produced its share of Dark witches and wizards, but members are not afraid to admit it.
Slytherins are always striving to be the best, something they have in common with Ravenclaws. However, Slytherins will never leave their own behind.
Notable Sytherins:
Salazar Slytherin was the founder of Slytherin house. His chocolate frog card describes him as one of the first Parselmouths, an accomplished Legilimens and a notorious champion of pure-blood supremacy.
The Head of Slytherin house is Severus Snape. He is the Hogwarts Potions master. Professor Snape’s office is in the dungeons.
The Bloody Baron is the Slytherin House ghost. He seems mysterious and unfriendly to the other houses, but he is actually very kind to Slytherins and will usually agree to scare people for them if asked nicely. Just don’t ask how he got bloodstained, he doesn’t like it.

Slytherin Accomodations:
The Slytherin common room and dormitories are located in Slytherin Dungeon. Students enter the Dungeon through a concealed stone wall. They must present the correct password (it changes every fortnight) to open the wall and reveal the entrance to the common room.
Slytherin’s common room looks out into the depths of the Hogwarts lake. The Giant Squid and other interesting aquatic creatures often pass by the windows. It has the feel of a mysterious, underwater shipwreck, but it is still quite cosy.
The dormitories have ancient four-posters with green and silk hangings and beadspreads embroidered with silver thread. Medieval tapestries depicting the adventures of famous Slytherins hang from the walls. The light comes from silver lanterns hung from the ceilings.
No outsider has entered the Slytherin common room for more than seven centuries. This is not including Ron and Harry’s sneaking in to the common room in the Chamber of Secrets, as it happens after the sorting in the second year, and they were never discovered, as they disguised themselves as Crabbe and Goyle using Polyjuice Potion.
